Maude Latour At Schubas Tavern
Maude Latour's music perfectly captures some of the biggest feelings in life, like falling in love, falling out of love, or meeting a lifetime friend. It depends on the situation but a lot of these experiences can be pretty vulnerable and scary and leave you feeling isolated from those who aren't going through the same things. What I love about Maude’s music is that her writing makes you feel like you are sharing these experiences with her rather than by yourself. She puts that vulnerability into her writing and expresses things that you may not even know how to put into words yet. Basically she just does all the hard stuff for you and you just get to listen and relate.
I went to see Maude perform at Schubas a few weeks ago. When I got there I learned that there was a line of fans who had been waiting to get in since 1pm and the show started at 7:30pm. The dedication of her fans became very clear and was further proved by how everyone knew e v e r y single lyric to her songs. I don't think I've ever been to a show of that size where the audience was almost as loud as the artist singing. She also had the crowd do a collective breathing exercise and it was very needed because the energy in the room was crazy.
The best song of the night was her song “Block Your Number.” I think that everyone who has been through a breakup should be able to experience this song live at least once in their life. I could probably write a whole essay about the writing and structure of this song but I will spare you the reading and you can just go listen to it yourself. Getting to hear everyone collectively sing that song was therapeutic and the perfect way to end the show before the encore.
Maude’s got another show at Subterranean coming up on March 18th. I would definitely recommend going because she won't be playing smaller venues like this for long. (You're also going up against people who would wait over 6 hours to get into her show so id go get a ticket asap.)
