In Review: Weyes Blood at Riviera

Weyes Blood aka Natalie Mering has been putting out music since 2011 when she released her debut EP Angels In America / Weyes Blood Split. Over the last few years she has become increasingly known and loved within the indie music scene.

I went to see Weyes Blood perform at The Riviera Theatre a few weeks ago and it was an experience like no other. The stage was filled with candlesticks, which immediately set the mood before the show had even started. Once Mering got on stage the energy of the whole room shifted as everyone was in awe of her presence. Dressed in a long white dress with a cape, she danced around the stage and bantered with the audience. Halfway through the show she collected DVDs from her fans including Kung Fu Panda, Over The Hedge, American Psycho, and The Departed. This seemed as though it may have been a long running joke between her and her fans.

Weyes Blood’s music is already extremely hypnotic, but her music paired with the lighting and stage setup made the show surreal. At one point Mering described the show as being like going to a secular church, which was spot on. After listening to her music you may question if her voice actually sounds as perfect in a live setting as it does recorded… and the answer is yes. I don’t know if I have ever heard an artist live with as beautiful of a voice as Mering’s. She probably could have sung the whole set acapella and people would've stayed.

If you're wanting to get into Weyes Blood's music you can listen to some of my favorites of her songs on our tour features playlist. She's also still on tour, so if you live in an area she is stopping through I would highly recommend going to a show.
